1. NOVEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING – SUN NOV 10
Our next membership meeting will be November 10, 2019, at the usual time in the usual place (i.e., 8:45am in the northernmost rooms of the Activity Center). This may be our last meeting in the Activity Center. Our speaker (postponed from October) will be Alan Stepakoff, whose background was Information Technology Security at JPL. He will be speaking on the topic: “How to have fun on the Internet without getting hurt”. He will discuss what the risks are to living with the internet and email and how to mitigate them. Topics will include privacy and safety practices for network communications, e-mail, passwords, use of credit cards, home automation, and the need to backup important data and files.
As always, our meeting will start with our usual MoTAS breakfast, followed by a short business meeting and our speaker. Please bring a potential active member with you: this is the best way to introduce someone to all the great guys in our group.
2. NOVEMBER DINING OUT AT CHI’S – TUE NOV 19
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our November Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, November 19 at Chi’s Chinese at 9635 Reseda Blvd. Northridge, CA 91324. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/.
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
3. PANEL DISCUSSION: VAPING – AN EPIDEMIC – SUN NOV 10
Sunday evening, November 10, between 6:30pm and 10:00pm, the Men of TAS is helping to cosponsor a panel discussion titled “Vaping: An Epidemic”. The discussion, which will be moderated by Rabbi Dalia, will include a child psychologist, a pediatrician, and an addiction expert. It is open to all adults ages 12 and older, and light refreshments will be served.
For those interested in the subject who listen to podcasts, the Gimlet podcast Science Vs. just had a very interesting episode on the subject titled “Vaping: What the Hell is Going On?!”. Vaping has grown in popularity with our young people, but they are then turning up at hospitals barely able to breathe. Over a thousand vapers have gotten sick–34 are dead–and no one knows why. The podcasts investigated the case of the mysterious vaping disease with help from Geri Sullivan, pulmonologist Dr. Louella Amos, lab director Iniobong Afia, inhalation toxicologist Prof. Ilona Jaspers and researcher Dr. Jamie Hartmann-Boyce. You can find the podcast at https://gimletmedia.com/shows/science-vs/n8hw5a.
4. SISTERHOOD HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE- SUN NOV 24
The annual Sisterhood Holiday Boutique is Sunday, November 24 from 10am to 3pm. Typically, the Men of TAS helps with the food service. We pickup sandwiches and pizza, and help sell the food to the attendees and the vendors. It is one of the opportunities for our youth to work with MoTAS to earn credit towards camperships by delivering the food.
If you will be able to help us at this event, you can sign up at https://volunteersignup.org/LRE8H.
