1. SHABBABAQUE EARLY REGISTRATION CLOSES TODAY AT 6:00PM!
Our second Shabbabaque of the summer is Friday. Early registration TODAY, Wednesday, August 19, at 6:00 PM! The evening will be extra special, as we’ll be kicking off the 50th anniversary celebration of the merger of North Valley Reform and Temple Beth Torah of San Fernando Valley to create Temple Ahavat Shalom in 1965. In commemoration, the August Shabbabaque will be celebrating all things sixties. So come out in your best sixties duds with your best sixties moves to celebrate one of the best things that happened in the sixties. This special Shabbabaque will feature a celebratory summer TAS Shabbat service with a barbeque dinner cooked by the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom.
Shabbabaque starts with an outdoor service in the TAS amphitheatre at 6:15pm, featuring music from the TAS House Band. This is followed at 7:15pm by a delicious barbeque dinner. The menu typically includes chicken, burgers, hot dogs, and roasted vegetables, along with Caesar salad (no chicken in the salad), plus all the sides. Afterwards, there will be sixties dancing, games from the sixties, and a wonderful Sisterhood oneg (they may even have brownies). There will also be a costume contest.
Registration is now open at http://shab-bbq.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. For this special Shabbabaque, the cost is $8 for children 11 and under, and $12 for adults. You don’t want to be a late registrant, so get your reservations in now.
Kicking off at the Shabbabaque will be Social Action’s 50 Mitzvahs for 50 Years!. The goal is to give every TAS member 50 ways to make a difference. During this very special year, we are striving to have each and every person or family get involved to make our world a better place. It starts with us. Between now and the Shabbabaque dinner on August 21st, let’s perform our first mitzvah. Mitzvah No. 1: Tools for Schools Bring school supplies and place them in the bins in the Temple Lobby or in front of the School Office by August 21st. Here’s what we need:
- CRAYONS (24 per box)
- PENCILS (wooden and mechanical)
- PENS (blue, black and red)
- POCKET FOLDERS AND SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS
- COLORED PENCILS AND MARKERS
- LOOSE LEAF PAPER AND 3 RING BINDERS
- GLUE STICKS AND RULERS
- SCISSORS (blunt and school type)
This will allow 3,000 children in need, in the Los Angeles area attend school with the Tools they need to learn and succeed. These are clients or the children of clients at Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, some of whom live in shelters. They are given backpacks filled with your donations.
2. SIGN UP FOR FOOTBALL SQUARES AT SHABBABAQUE
Summer is Football Squares season! It’s an easy way to support TAS and possibly win a little back. $50 gets you a random square on the board, where randomized rows and columns have the digits 0 through 9. During Monday Night Football season, match the last digit of the home and away team scores in a quarter and win! Forms are also available in the Temple Foyer. Funds raised by the Sports Squares programs are used to fund specific needs that are often unfunded, and expenditures are distinct from MoTAS’ general fund contributions. Registration closes at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 11.
Sign up at the August Shabbabaque! Our grid mavens will be at the August Shabbabaque eager and willing to help you purchase a square. We will even be able to take credit cards on the spot, including American Express. Let’s see if we can sell at least 50 squares at the 50th kickoff!
3. SIGN UP FOR THE GOLF TOURNAMENT — PLAY/SPONSOR/ADVERTISE — AT SHABBABAQUE
The main fundraiser for MoTAS is the Annual MoTAS Charity Golf Tournament. This tournament provides the funds that MoTAS uses to support TAS and TAS Social Action Partners. The 2015 Annual MoTAS Charity Golf Tournament will be Monday, October 19, 2015 at Calabasas Country Club.
Sign up at the August Shabbabaque!. Our Golf Tournament chair, Barry Mann, will be at the August Shabbabaque ready and willing to answer any question you may have on the tournament, sponsorship, and advertising. We will have sign up forms available, and we will be able to take your completed form and payment at the Shabbabaque (including American Express). Read on to learn about the many ways for you to participate and support MoTAS at all financial levels – you do not need to attend the tournament to support the tournament:
» Support the TAS Calendar/Golf Tournament Program.
You may have seen last year’s calendar in the Temple Foyer. This is a large handout that contains programmatic calendars from Temple committees and organizations for the entire programming year. It is a reference that can be used to promote the congregation as a single handout to show to new members. In the center is the program from the Golf Tournament itself. The calendar/program provides space for advertising and messages; MoTAS has specifically priced this space to allow anyone to participate.
$18 – Three Line Messages. At the personal level, you can purchase a three line message — whatever you want to say — for $18. Show your support for MoTAS. Show your support for TAS. Shout out to your friends and family — it’s up to you. Each message helps to support MoTAS.
$36 – Business Card Ads. You can also place business-size “In Memorium” messages to remember your loved ones, and for the same price you can submit business cards (personal or business) for publication in the book.
One goal MoTAS has it so draw in the community, and larger ads — from quarter page to full page — are a great way to do that. Get businesses you support to place ads to promote their business to the Temple. This costs you nothing, and helps MoTAS immensely. It also helps us build our relationship to the commumity. » Get Golf Tournament Sponsors
Moving up the price scale, there are a large number of sponsorship opportunies. Companies and individuals can sponsor the tournament, starting at $180 for a Tee sign and going up. This is a great way for a corporation or local business to show their support. Sponsorships at the Corporate level and above include player spots, and all include advertising in the TAS Calendar/Tournament Program. » Donate to the Raffle/Silent Auction
A key element of the Golf Tournament is our raffle and auction, and you can help by getting local businesses that you frequent to donate certificates and items for our auction table. Then again, you may actually play golf — or have friends or business associates who play golf. The entry fee is $215 per player, and that includes a full day on the course as well as a continental breakfast, full lunch, and full dinner buffet, together with after dinner entertainment. 4. VOLUNTEER CALL: PANCAKE BREAKFAST – SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2015
On Sunday, August 30th, join the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom starting at 8:45 AM in the Social Hall as we host our traditional Pancake Breakfast for the first day of religious school. The cost is low — $5 for pancakes, $1 for juice/coffee only, and free for teachers and new school families enrolling their first child in the school. The morning provides you the opportunity to learn about the different ways to get involved with TAS and strengthen that relationship. As parents, we are the role models for our children. If we get involved with the synagogue, we’re demonstrating to our children the value of involvement. Please note the special date: The Pancake Breakfast is early due to the High Holy Days. The first day of instruction for the Religious School is Sunday, September 20th – and we look forward to seeing you at our first speakers meeting on that day.
