3. DECEMBER MOTAS MONTHLY MEETING (SU 12/11)

The next monthly membership meeting of MoTAS will be on Sunday, December 11.

Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short story “Gimpel the Fool” (1953) appeared in English translation in a 1953 edition of the Partisan Review. The story is considered one of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s most notable and representative work of short fiction. With this story, Bellow launched Singer on a career that would result in the Nobel Prize for Literature. Let’s all read it. Then talk about it. You can find the story at http://tinyurl.com/motas-gimpel.

The video, Do You Understand the Electoral College, has over 44 million views, over 26K comments on Facebook and over 1 million shares. This has all occurred over a period of five days. How did this happen? Donald Trump was elected President by winning the Electoral College; but Hillary Clinton will probably win the popular vote. Suddenly, the Electoral College is a very hot topic. See for yourself. https://www.prageru.com/courses/political-science/do-you-understand-electoral-college

As usual, the meeting will begin with breakfast at 8:45 am, with the meeting proper starting at 9:00 am. At this meeting, we’ll also be discussing our Jewish Christmas event and the January MoTAS Shabbat.

At our November meeting we watched videos that are being restricted by youtube and Google. You can do something about it. Visit https://www.prageru.com/stop-youtube-blocking-prageru-videos to investigate.

We need to set up a system for contact members who are sick, bereaved or in need of help. We are going to set up a contact list of volunteers. Also as list of members and their loved ones we should contact. If any of you have experience or best practices, please let president@tasnorthridge-motas.org know.

5. PLANNING FOR JEWISH CHRISTMAS (SU 12/25)

We are currently in the planning stages for our Jewish Christmas activity, also known as a movie and Chinese food. This year, Christmas Eve is the first night of Chanukah, and Christmas Day (and hence, dinner on Christmas) is the 2nd night of Chanukah. Last year, we made a reservation at Hunan Garden and had a group dinner with a fixed menu and fixed costs. This year, owning to the confluence of holidays, we have two options:

  1. Go Out for Chinese. Do what we did last year: coordinate a menu with the restaurant, pay in advance, and all meet for dinner at a specified time.
  2. Latke Party/Take Out Chinese. In the spirit of the Holiday, we’ll have potluck latkes (bring your batter), and bring in Chinese food (again, pre-ordered). For this, we would need a volunteer to provide a house to host.

As we did last year, we’ll pick a small set of movies and coordinate showings so we can meet as groups for the difference shows, before we meet for discussion and dinner.

If you have a particular preference for what we should do, please drop an email to faigin@cahighways.org.
