From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org.

1. THANK YOUS – SUKKAH BUILDING – PANCAKE BREAKFAST

A lot of thank yous are in order for all the work MoTAS did over the last week.

Thank you to our sukkah construction team: Bernie Singer, Scott Gore, Bob Levine, Jeff Neiman, Joe Sculler, Alan Stepakoff, Roger Lowe, Joel Lowell, Howard Miller, Les Birken, Larry Hoffman, Larry Pfefer, and the fellow between Larry and Scott who’s name we now know was Bob Brostoff. Thanks to Daniel Faigin for coordinating the Palm Fronds. We had just enough fronds (you can never have enough fronds). Next year we will go back to building the sukkah on Sunday morning. We need to adjust some of the hardware to accommodate having the larger opening for the entrance. Additional wall panels would be nice.

Thanks to our Pancake Breakfast team: Barry Mann, Daniel Faigin, Alia Yollis, Scott Yollis, Bill Shapiro, Alan Stepakoff, Ben and Cynthia Tenn, and Larry Hoffman. Scott Y. and Bill make the best pancakes. Looks like we served around 50 people.

2. FALL POKER TOURNAMENT – SUN OCT 22

Our Fall Poker Tournament is Sunday, October 22, and should operate similar to the Spring tournament. The sign up forms and on-line signup is available at the expected place: https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/poker/.

3. DINING OUT – PRESTO PASTA – TUE OCT 24

“Dining Does Good” has returned. Things have gotten more complicated since the pandemic with all the delivery apps and such, so this is DINE IN or PICK UP only. Let’s support MoTAS, and all show our smiling faces at Presto Pasta in Granada Hills on Tuesday, October 24.

Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our June Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, October 24 at Presto Pasta, 17923 Chatsworth St.,Granada Hills, CA 91344 (818) 360-7737, granadahills@prestopasta.com. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ or download it directly from our Box account .

We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.

Our next dining out will be November 8th at Chis Chinese.

4. CHANUKAH BOUTIQUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The annual Sisterhood Holiday Boutique is scheduled for Sunday, October 29 from 10am to 3pm. Typically, the Men of TAS helps with the food service. The current plan is that we will be picking up individually wrapped sandwiches and condiments, and providing bagged chips, canned or bottled drinks. We will need people to help pickup (and possibly pre-package) the food. We will need folks to sell and deliver the food. We will need folks to help clean up. If you will be able to help us at this event, please contact Larry Hoffman at president@tasnorthridge-motas.org.

5. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS

Our November Membership Meeting will be Sunday, November 5 at 845am. Our previous speaker had to reschedule, and we’re looking for new speaker.

Our December Membership Meeting will be Sunday, December 3 at 845am. Our speaker will be Janet Rice, TAS President.

New Business:

Scott Gore said that TAS is sponsoring a beach clean-up on Sunday, Oct 15, at 10:15 am, Will Rogers State Beach, lifeguard station 18. A sign-up form is in the temple’s weekly bulletin.

Poker Tournament Sunday evening, Oct 22. A sign-up sheet was circulated.

The Holiday Boutique at TAS will take place Sunday morning, Oct 29. A sign-up sheet was circulated.

Dining Does Good coordinator Barry Mann announced that Presto Pasta on Chatsworth Street in Granada Hills is the October venue. The date for this popular MoTAS fundraiser is Tuesday, Oct 24. Don’t forget to present the flyer when you place your order to dine in or take out: https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ (remember to get the correct date, as the November flyer is already there).

Next month’s venue to dine in or take out will be Chi’s Chinese Restaurant on Wednesday, Nov 8. Daniel Faigin said a flyer for Chi’s will be added to the MoTAS website shortly.

The Veterans Shabbat will be Friday evening, Nov 10. Hal Bass will send Rabbi Becky the list of veterans he has maintained and inquire how she wishes to proceed. In past years, we have played a medley of military songs for each branch, and the rabbi has called upon veterans to make a brief statement from the bimah about their military experience. Additionally, Bob Levine suggested that Hal ask Aaron Solomon to include a place on the annual application for new and returning members about military service.

Bob Levine introduced, and Barry Mann seconded, a motion to have MoTAS sponsor the Oneg at the Veterans Shabbat on Nov 10. The motion carried unanimously.

Ideas for future MoTAS events were generated at the September meeting and are to be discussed further: a men-only discussion group, car rally & scavenger hunt, go-carts, coffee at Starbucks, trip to Las Vegas to include the new MSG Sphere, making and/or selling hamantaschen, an escape room exercise, visit to the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar and possibly to the Petersen Automotive Museum in L.A.

Educational Presentation: Scott Yollis’s son, Coby, works for AT&T in Burbank, after previously having been employed by Spectrum. Coby has intimate knowledge of the communications industry (TV, telephone, internet) and various ways customers can save money. He discussed landlines, internet speeds, premium services and promotions (in which discounts often are time limited, such as one year). The program was well received by everyone in attendance.

Adjournment and Next MoTAS Meeting: The next MoTAS membership meeting will take place at the temple, Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 8:45 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Hal Bass/Secretary
