1. BUY YOUR FOOTBALL SQUARES NOW
Summer is Football Squares season! It’s an easy way to support TAS and possibly win a little back. $50 gets you a random square on the board, where randomized rows and columns have the digits 0 through 9. During Monday Night Football season, match the last digit of the home and away team scores in a quarter and win! More information, complete rules, online signup, and signup forms are available at http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org, or contact Bob Levine (818-271-1282, tasboblevine@gmail.com) or Kathy Pullman (gridmaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org). Forms will soon be available in the Temple Foyer. Funds raised by the Sports Squares programs are used to fund specific needs that are often unfunded, and expenditures are distinct from MoTAS’ general fund contributions. Registration closes at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 6.
As you recall, the net proceeds for the Football Squares goes to support TAS projects that cannot be funded, either adequately, or at all, by current temple budgeting. It is your support that makes these things happen. As a result of your participation and support, the temple has had a major overhaul to the kitchen, and we have been able to offer more campership funds to allow our youth to go to Jewish camp in the summer.
Please support us this year, as you have in the past. All the information about the game, as well as sign-up instructions, are available at our website:
http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org
We hope you can see your way to be part of our team this season. You might win some money, but the temple is the big winner. A warm thank-you from the Men of TAS.
2. PANCAKE BREAKFAST – SUN AUG 18 ** VOLUNTEERS NEEDED **
On Sunday August 18, MoTAS will be hosting our free Pancake Breakfast for the first day of religious school. Our Master Flipper (Scott) and Master Mixer (Bill) are looking for about eight other guys to help set up our serving tables, prepare food, serve and clean-up. We start setting up around 7:00 and are finished by 10:30. Please let Howard know by email to president@tasnorthridge-motas.org or signup at https://volunteersignup.org/QPTQP if you can help. We also need a couple of guys to make an easy shopping run to Costco a few days beforehand for batter, water, syrup, juices and a small number of other items. Let’s get the kids off to a good start this year. Please let us know if you can be there to help out!
3. DINING OUT AT MARIA’S ITALIAN – MON AUG 19
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our August Dining Does Good” will be Monday, August 19 at Maria’s Italian Kitchen at Reseda and Nordhoff in Northridge. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/.
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
4. SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE REMINDER: UPCOMING ELECTION / CANDIDATES FORUM
The Social Action committee has asked MoTAS to pass on the following reminder: The City of LA has 15 council districts, with CD 12 covering the area from Granada Hills through Northridge and Porter Ranch down through Chatsworth and North Hills. This is where the vast majority of TAS members live. There will be a final runoff between the two leading candidates from the initial election back in early June. They are Dr. Loraine Lundquist and John Lee. The election will be on August 13, with vote by mail ballots arriving as early as July 13. The last day to register to vote is July 29.
Connected to this, TAS will be hosting a candidates forum on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 6:00 PM. If you live in Council District 12, MoTAS encourages you to attend this forum, to make sure you are registered to vote, and to vote for the candidate of your choice.
5. HOLD THE DATE: OCTOBER POKER TOURNAMENT
The 2019 poker tournament is planned for Sunday, October 27. Mark your calendar now for the date, and start thinking about who you’re going to bring to play at your table — and get them to mark the date as well. This is our big fundraiser for the year.
6. EVENT REPORT: TOUR OF JEWISH DOWNTOWN LA – SUN JUL 14
On Sunday July 14, the Men of Tas went on a walking tour that illustrated the Jewish history of central Los Angeles. Six of us walked through downtown looking at the sites of the original temples in Los Angeles. We also learned that the shopping district and the theater district were initially developed by Jews in the late-1800s and later. Most of the renovations have also been funded by Jewish citizens. Laraine Miller and Brian and Cheryl Hatkoff are shown on Angels Flight in the picture.
The tour started at Grand Park, the site of the first Orthodox Synagogue in Los Angeles. We then walked to the parking garage S of the old LA Times building, which was the original location of Cong. B’nai Brith, which became Wilshire Blvd Temple. We then visited the Bradbury Building and talked about the renovations and impacts of Jewish businessmen at that corner. We then walked to Angel’s Flight and talked about Bunker Hill. We came back through the Grand Central Market, walking down to the Theater District to discuss Jewish involvement in the renovation of the theaters, as well as famous and infamous happening in the buildings in that area. Think about joining us on our next trip.
We really enjoyed meeting the Barrio Boychik, Shmuel Gonzalez, and hope to get him out to TAS to speak. To learn about other tours that Shmuel gives, visit https://www.bhhistorytours.com/. Note that his tours sell out quickly.
