1. AUGUST SHABBABAQUE – FRI AUG 17 ** LAST CHANCE **
Our second Shabbat Bar-B-Que (Shabbabaque) of the summer is THIS FRIDAY, August 17th. EARLY BIRD SIGNUPS CLOSE WEDNESDAY!
To Our Volunteers: Please make plans to help MoTAS make this event successful by planning on helping us prepare food, set up, serving and/or clean-up (we need a couple more guys than last time please, we will be out around 9). Those of you that have committed to coming early to help prepare the food should show up at 4pm please. Everyone coming to help with set-up needs to be there by 6pm please. We will need six guys to stay to the end and help take down the serving tables, clean the utensils and put everything back in the closet. I cannot believe we will not be done by 9-9:30. Please remember we cannot leave these tasks for just a couple of people.
Please let us know specifically if you can help prepare food as we need at least six guys or whether you will be there to help set up and clean-up. To Our Attendees: Shabbabaque starts with an outdoor service in the TAS amphitheatre at 6:15pm, featuring music from our rockin’ TAS House Band. This is followed at 7:15pm by a delicious barbeque dinner. Meat items will include turkey burgers, beef burgers, and hot dogs. Vegetarian items will include vegetarian patties, broccoli roasted with garlic, and baked potatoes. Afterwards, there will be a wonderful Sisterhood oneg. - Cost: $11 Adults / $7 Children (+$5 for registrations after Weds., 8/15 at 6PM). For religious school, ECEC, and ITC families, the family comes free with one adult registration.

2. DINING OUT AT PRESTO PASTA – TUE AUG 21
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our August “Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, August 21, at Presto Pasta in Granada Hills. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/.
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
3. PANCAKE BREAKFAST – SUN AUG 26 ** VOLUNTEERS NEEDED **
On Sunday August 26, MoTAS will be hosting our free Pancake Breakfast for the first day of religious school. Our Master Flipper (Scott) and Master Mixer (Bill) are looking for about eight other guys to help set up our serving tables, prepare food, serve and clean-up. We start setting up around 7:00 and are finished by 10:30. Please let Howard know (by email to president@tasnorthridge-motas.org or Click Here To RSVP to Volunteer on Eventbee) if you can help. We also need a couple of guys to make an easy shopping run to Costco a few days beforehand for batter, water, syrup, juices and a small number of other items. Let’s get the kids off to a good start this year. Please let us know if you can be there to help out!
4. SUKKAH BUILDING – SUN SEP 23 @ 8AM
JEWISH MEN WITH TOOLS (MoTAS) will be building our temple Sukkah on Sunday September 23. This easy job can be completed in about an hour and needs to be as the school hopes to use it that morning. We cannot build it before then because of the High Holidays. Please come with gloves, Allen wrenches, and friends. Please let Howard (president@tasnorthridge-motas.org) know if YOU can shop for chicken wire and phone ties. AND, as Valley Crest is not offering palm fronds, please let us know if you know where we can get them. If YOU have a truck available to pick up the palm fronds, we would appreciate that also. We will have bagels and drinks. Please let us know if you can be there to help out!
5. SEPT MOTAS MEETING – THU SEP 20 DINNER MEETING
September is crazy with the first three Sundays falling over Labor Day weekend or over the High Holy days. So, how about rebuilding your calorie count with us on the Thursday after Yom Kippur, September 20. We will have a casual meeting at a place and time to be announced. You are welcome to bring your wife. Our new MoTAS secret greeting will be announced so don’t miss it if you want to in on the secret.
6. CHARITY POKER TOURNAMENT (SUN OCT 21) – VOLUNTEERS/PLAYERS NEEDED
MoTAS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS/PLANNERS/DONATIONS: MoTAS, along with the Men of TRZ, is organizing a big Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament on Sunday October 21. We hope to have 120 players, so please plan on coming and ask all of your poker playing friends to participate. Anyone, male or female, who likes poker will have a great time. We also have opportunities for sponsorship recognition, so please help us find sponsors. If you don’t play, we need a few guys to help with our registration desk and to serve food and drinks. We are also looking for raffle and auction items that help us make additional money. So, even if you don’t play, we can use your help in making this event a success. Our first planning meeting will be Monday August 27th at Howards house at 7pm in Northridge. Contact Howard at president@tasnorthridge-motas.org for directions. We are all proud of what the Men of TAS does with our financially supported projects, so please find a way to help us execute this fundraising effort.
POTENTIAL PLAYERS: You are invited to participate in the 2018 Men of TAS (Temple Ahavat Shalom) and Men of Temple Ramat Zion Texas Hold-em Charity Poker Tournament to be held on Sunday October 21 at Temple Ahavat Shalom. This year’s winner will earn $1,000 and there will be cash prizes for everyone making the final table. Other opportunities to win big include our famous 50/50 cash drawing (final selection can win $1,000), a raffle and a silent auction.
Your $80 entry fee entitles you to a players seat, a lite dinner, a drink and five raffle tickets. Feel free to print and fill out the registration form and mail your check payable to Men of TAS (or your credit card information) to Howard Miller at 9656 Geyser Ave, Northridge CA 91324. This year we are holding our tournament along with the Men of Temple Ramat Zion. Also, a portion of the Men of TAS proceeds will benefit the TAS Early Childhood Education Center. Various sponsorship opportunities are available on the registration form for those who want to help the Men of TAS and the Men of Temple Ramat Zion fund important activities in support of their temple and local community. Other contributions may include future local sports tickets (Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Rams, Chargers, Galaxy, LAFC, UCLA, USC, etc.) and upcoming entertainment (tickets to local concerts or plays) that can be used for auction items or raffle prizes.

7. FOOTBALL SQUARES ** BOARD FILLING RAPIDLY – GET YOURS NOW **
Update from the Grid Masters on 8/31/2018: The players are now in training camps, so the opening game is not far away. There are only a few places left on our 2018 Sports Squares board, so this is a reminder to reserve your spot before they’re all gone. Your participation in the past has always been so appreciated, and MoTAS hopes you will continue your generosity. You can order online at http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org or send in your check ($50 per square) payable to MoTAS. Mark the envelope “MoTAS football squares” so it’s routed to us directly.
Summer is Football Squares season! It’s an easy way to support TAS and possibly win a little back. $50 gets you a random square on the board, where randomized rows and columns have the digits 0 through 9. During Monday Night Football season, match the last digit of the home and away team scores in a quarter and win! Forms will soon be available in the Temple Foyer. Funds raised by the Sports Squares programs are used to fund specific needs that are often unfunded, and expenditures are distinct from MoTAS’ general fund contributions. Registration closes at 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 8.
As you recall, the net proceeds for the Football Squares goes to support TAS projects that cannot be funded, either adequately, or at all, by current temple budgeting. It is your support that makes these things happen. As a result of your participation and support, the temple has had a major overhaul to the kitchen, and we have been able to offer more campership funds to allow our youth to go to Jewish camp in the summer.
