This Friday at 7:30 PM is the annual Sisterhood Shabbat. Just as Sisterhood supports the MoTAS Shabbat, MoTAS supports the Sisterhood Shabbat. We encourage you to attend; if you can arrive early to help set up the oneg, or stay afterwards to help clean up after the oneg, it will be appreciated.
The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” have returned, and this year they support MoTAS 100%! Our May “Dining Does Good” will be Monday, May 21, at Los Toros in Chatsworth. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/. We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
In 2012, the Men of TAS eliminated the dues requirement for membership. We moved to an inclusive model where every man in TAS is part of the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom. Since we don’t have dues, we don’t have steady revenue. So, every year Men of TAS asks you to support our work financially. We need every man in the congregation who supports the work we do to contribution and show your support. Whether is it $18, $180, or $1800 — whatever the amount — your participation is a vote for MoTAS.
We mailed out our appeal mailing in early February. Hopefully you have received your envelope. You can also find the message on our support page at http://support.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. On that page, you can find a printable donation form that you can mail in, as well as a link to contribute online. It is through your contributions that MoTAS is able to do that work that we do for the congregation. Please think about how much MoTAS means to the congregation, and how much the relationships you have with MoTAS mean to you. Then add 20%, and make a donation :-). Seriously, the MoTAS leadership works hard to make MoTAS valuable to you and the congregation. This is your chance to let us know what we mean to you.
See your friends and fellow congregants that have really stepped up to support us on our website’s Wall of Honor at http://wallofhonor.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. Join the Wall of Honor yourself by donating $100 or more. Your generous gift will provide fun events for all Temple members, kids to adults, teachers and staff. Continue to repair and improve our facilities. Most importantly, it will help us continue teaching and living the Jewish values that guide and enrich all our lives.
Signups are now open for first Shabbabeque of the summer on Friday, June 16th. Shabbabaque starts with an outdoor service in the TAS amphitheatre at 6:15pm, featuring music from our rockin’ TAS House Band. This is followed at 7:15pm by a delicious barbeque dinner. Meat items will include turkey burgers, sirloin burgers, and Hebrew National hot dogs. Vegetarian items will include veggie patties, green and yellow squash roasted with garlic, and baked potatoes. Afterwards, there will be a wonderful Sisterhood oneg. The full menu is on the Shabbabaque event page. Our goal is for everyone to be happy. If you have special dietary needs, please contact us at the email address below.
There is also a special registration program for ECEC and ITC families: Pay for one adult, and the family comes free.

TAS Demographics: Howard Miller prepared a detailed presentation about TAS membership demographics. There currently are 325 dues-paying member units, including 35% with dues adjustment. Mean age is 61, with an age range of 29-92. Our members live in 47 ZIP Codes, only 6 of which hold more than 10 member units: 91311, 91324, 91325, 91326, 91343 and 91344. 8% of members reside elsewhere in the West Valley or South Valley, 3% in Santa Clarita, and 7% east of the 405 Freeway or outside the San Fernando Valley. 39% have been with TAS for from 1-9 years. In recent years, there has been a drop-off of 50% of “new” members (in the temple for <2 years), the majority of whom do not have school-age children. On the other hand, over 50% of congregants continue their membership well past the time their children have entered adulthood. Howard closed by saying that the Board of Trustees was currently considering changes to the temple’s dues structure.
Congregational Meeting: Annual Congregational Meeting will take place on Sunday, June 10, at 10 am.
Next MoTAS Meeting: Sunday, June 10, 2018, at 8:45 am.
