1. APRIL MEMBERSHIP MEETING – VALLEY HISTORY – SUN APR 15
The next monthly meeting will be Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 8:45am in the Activity Center (yes, the third Sunday, for some reason). Join us at 8:45am for our traditional breakfast, followed by a summary of upcoming events. This will be a speakers meeting. Our speaker will be Michel (Michael) Stevens, President of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley (who is a member of the TBH Brotherhood). He will be talking about the timeline of the history of the San Fernando Valley, including its role in aerospace and aviation; entertainment and music. We’ll also learn about the Jewish population and prominent people that shaped the valley.
Michel (Michael) Stevens was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He enjoyed a rich childhood filled with memories of ranches, citrus groves, dairies and farms, spread throughout the valley as well as access to the mountains, sea and desert of southern California. He possesses over 25 years of strategic marketing, sponsorship development, event marketing, digital marketing and sales promotion experience. He has held executive and senior level positions taking him to Portland, OR, Tampa and New York with companies such as Turner Sports, Aspen Marketing Group, Benenson Janson, World Cup USA, M&FM, CO-OP Promotions and Major League Soccer. Since 2002, he has been President/CMO of Achieve Marketing Group, a Los Angeles-based integrated marketing consultancy with core competencies in strategic marketing, sponsorship development, national sales promotions, digital marketing, event, cause and sports marketing. Over the last 25 consecutive years, Mr. Stevens has been proud to have supported numerous causes as a board member, advisor and or volunteer for organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America, City of Hope, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, F. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research Center, Santa Monica Jaycees, Tampa Special Olympics, Temple Beth Hillel, Urban League of Portland and Young Furniture Associates. Currently, he is President of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.
We’ll also be coordinating a tour of their facility (which is at Nordhoff and Wilbur) at some point in the future.
2. APRIL TAX DAY DINING OUT – CPK – TUES APR 17
The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” have returned, and this year they support MoTAS 100%! Our March “Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, April 17, at California Pizza Kitchen at the Northridge Mall. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/. We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
Please join us for this tax day fundraiser. Come share your sorry in what you had to pay, or celebrate your refund, with your MoTAS family. We can guarantee that none of your pizza pie will go to Uncle Sam (unless you bring him to the fundraiser) … but that 20% of your check will go to MoTAS!
3. JEFF SHULMAN
Email this week from the temple brought the sad news of the passing of Jeff Shulman, a long time active MoTAS member. We will miss Jeff’s smiling face and cheery personality at our meetings and events. We encourage all MoTAS members to support the Shulman family during this time:
- A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Eden Memorial Park located at 11500 Sepulveda Boulevard Mission Hills, CA 91345.
- A Meal of Condolence will be held immediately following the funeral at the Shulman home located at 17626 Lahey Street Granada Hills, CA 91344.
- Shiva Minyanim will be held at the Shulman home on Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m.
We would like to share your remembrances of Jeff, especially remembrances of him at MoTAS events. Please send them to me, faigin@cahighways.org by Tuesday, April 17 at 6pm, and I’ll get them into the next mailing of the MoTAS Weekly.
MoTAS extends our condolences to Rivi and the entire Shulman family and their extended family.
4. THE MOTAS ANNUAL APPEAL NEEDS YOUR HELP
In 2012, the Men of TAS eliminated the dues requirement for membership. We moved to an inclusive model where every man in TAS is part of the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom. Since we don’t have dues, we don’t have steady revenue. So, every year Men of TAS asks you to support our work financially. We need every man in the congregation who supports the work we do to contribution and show your support. Whether is it $18, $180, or $1800 — whatever the amount — your participation is a vote for MoTAS.
We mailed out our appeal mailing in early February. Hopefully you have received your envelope. You can also find the message on our support page at http://support.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. On that page, you can find a printable donation form that you can mail in, as well as a link to contribute online. It is through your contributions that MoTAS is able to do that work that we do for the congregation. Please think about how much MoTAS means to the congregation, and how much the relationships you have with MoTAS mean to you. Then add 20%, and make a donation :-). Seriously, the MoTAS leadership works hard to make MoTAS valuable to you and the congregation. This is your chance to let us know what we mean to you.
See your friends and fellow congregants that have really stepped up to support us on our website’s Wall of Honor at http://wallofhonor.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. Join the Wall of Honor yourself by donating $100 or more. Your generous gift will provide fun events for all Temple members, kids to adults, teachers and staff. Continue to repair and improve our facilities. Most importantly, it will help us continue teaching and living the Jewish values that guide and enrich all our lives.

Donations for the Yellow Candle mailing have not come in as strong as in the past. To help cover our costs, this is a reminder that your contribution for your candle helps ensure that we can continue this program in the future, and continue to never forget.
