1. MANLY MITZVOT FOR MITZVAH DAY
Mitzvah Day is this Sunday, November 1. On Mitzvah Day, Jews all over the country gather together to make the world a better place — starting with their synagogues, their communities, and their cities. In your email, you’ve been receiving weekly suggestions from the TAS Social Action committee of what you can do to help. This is part of the “50 Mitzvot for 50 Years” campaign. You can learn more about all that is going on at TAS on Sunday at http://www.tasnorthridge.org/mitzvah-day-at-tas-sunday-november-1-2015/. Whether you participate with MoTAS, or do an activity of your choosing, we encourage you to wear whatever generation of MoTAS/Mens Club shirt that you have to show that MoTAS is doing what it can.
With respect to a specific MoTAS activity, I’ve been asking for suggestions for weeks, but have not received any. Following up on a suggestion from Judy on the Social Action committee, MoTAS is going to spend the morning cleaning the school kitchens. After that, we’ll see what other activities we can do to help clean, maintain, rebuild and repair the TAS infrastractures. So bring sponges and cleaning implements (and keep a toolbox in your car), and we’ll see you at TAS at 9am on Sunday, November 1, for Mitzvah Day.
2. SPECIAL 50th ANNIVERSARY SPEAKER: HAL DAUM, NOVEMBER 8, 2015
As you should be well aware by now, TAS is in the process of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the creation of Temple Ahavat Shalom as the merger of North Valley Reform and Temple Beth Torah of San Fernando Valley. Temple Beth Torah was founded in 1951 in Arleta; North Valley Reform was started in 1962. Hal Daum, at the time, was a student rabbi, and he has the distinction of being the first Rabbi of the newly formed North Valley Reform Temple. Over the years since then, Hal has had a long and varied career, including working in real estate, as a parole officer, and as the Executive Director for a number of congregations. Hal will be sharing stories about the earliest days of TAS.
The November meeting will be Sunday, November 8. Breakfast starts around 8:45AM, followed by our usual activity review at 9AM, and the speaker starting around 10AM. We invite you to join us. There is no cost, although donations are welcome to offset the cost of breakfast.
I’m pleased to announce that I have just confirmed our December and January speakers. On December 13th, join us for a special Chanukah breakfast as we listen to Benny Ferdman talk about his experiences this summer on the Helix Trip from Yiddishkayt to Eastern Europe. On January 10, 2016, our focus turns to starting the new year safe, when we have a speaker from the CHP on their “Age Well, Drive Smart” program for drivers over 55. Whether you are over 55, or dealing with a driver over 55, this will be of interest to you.
3. GOLF TOURNAMENT PICTURES
The MoTAS Annual Charity Golf Tournament was Monday, October 19. Al Lapides was out taking pictures of the event, and they are now uploaded to the Temple web site. Relive the fun by visiting http://www.tasnorthridge.org/motas-golf-tournament-oct-19-2015/. There are over 200 photos from the event.
Thank you, Al, for all your hard work taking the pictures.
4. SIGN UP FOR MOTAS ACTION ALERTS
The last few weeks have demonstrated that MoTAS needs the ability to reach its active members quickly. These are members that regularly come to events, that volunteer, and who are likely to respond to an email message. The last two alerts have gone to the entire male membership of TAS, because we have no other list. Doing that too often runs the risk of becoming SPAM, and as you well know, SPAM is not kosher.
To address this, MoTAS would like to set up an action alert list. We want this list to be OPT IN, meaning we will only subscribe it to you with your permission. You can give us your permission by visiting http://tinyurl.com/motas-action-alert and RSVPing for the list. We will also be contacting recent volunteers and speaker meeting attendees to see if they will give us permission to add them to the list.
5. MOTAS WATER BOTTLES
For the golf tournament, MoTAS ordered a number of aluminum flip-top water bottles. These are blue, with the MoTAS logo in white. For those who did not play or volunteer at the tournament, we are making them available for a small donation of $10 to MoTAS. We will have them available at Mitzvah Day and at the November MoTAS Meeting.
