Mitzvah Day 2014Set aside Sunday, November 2nd for the Temple Ahavat Shalom Mitzvah Day. As part of Temple Ahavat Shalom’s participation in the community-wide Mitzvah Day, MoTAS will be “Jews with Tools for the Schools.” The plan is for members of MoTAS to help do whatever repairs we can do around the TAS School Facilities, which are used by both the religious school and the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) – primarily painting and light
maintenance. Please join us at the Temple at 9:00 AM on Sunday morning, November 2nd to be part of the celebration.

In addition to the MoTAS activity, there will be a number of hands-on activities to assist many of our community partners. This year, we are also offering several engaging speakers and discussions of current issues, here in Los Angeles and around the globe. Sisterhood, and the Adult Choir are also taking on special activities for Mitzvah Day. There will also be opportunities to participate in activities at other sites in the community, including the
CROP Hunger Walk, a 5K walk starting at Northridge United Methodist Church, 9650 Reseda Blvd., beginning at 1:30 PM.

5. LOOKING AHEAD TO DECEMBER

Start marking your calendar for these MoTAS activities in December:

  • Sunday, December 14 at 8:45 AM. Our December Speakers Meeting will feature a Judaica show and tell. Every temple member I visit has a lovely Judaica collection. This is your opportunity to tell the story behind one or two pieces: where did you get it, and why is it meaningful to you. Let’s share our stories.
  • Sunday, December 21 at 6:00 PM. Our December Mens-Only Hangout will have a Chanukah theme, as we get together to cook our favorite greasy Chanukah food, while we discuss our monthly topic (or not).
  • Thursday, December 25, Time TBD. What do Jews do on Christmas? For many, the tradition is to go out to a movie and have Chinese food. Why not do this with your MoTAS friends and families? We’ll pick a couple of movies and coordinate getting together to see them, and then go to a local Chinese restaurant for dinner.

6. SPORTS SQUARES UPDATE

Sample Sports Squares GridThe following are tentative results for Week 7 of the Fall 2014 MoTAS Football Squares — do not consider them final until the GridMaster returns from his trip and confirms them. As always, results are also posted at http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org/:

  • Week Seven(Houston at Pittsburgh): Q1 (Houston 7, Pittsburgh 0): Joe Abrams; Q2 (Houston 13, Pittsburgh 24): Fran Krimston; Q3 (Houston 13, Pittsburgh 24): Fran Krimston; Final (Houston 23, Pittsburgh 30): Shelly Spector.

Remember that checks are usually issued later in the week and are issued by Chase, so please do not discard the envelopes as junk mail.

Note that our gridmasters will be out of town, and unable to transmit winner’s announcements for the next 3 games. The grids will be sent out, and I’ll attempt to post provisional results in the MoTAS Weekly. The gridmasters will confirm the results for weeks 7, 8, and 9 after week 9’s game.
