The leadership of the Men of Ahavat Shalom extend our wishes for the happiest and healthiest of new years to all the men of Temple Ahavat Shalom. May you have year filled with health, meaningful relationships, and deepening friendships. May you be written and inscribed in the Book of Life.

On behalf of the leadership of the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom, if we have done anything that has offended you in the past year, we sincerely apologize; as for anything you might have done, it’s forgotten. We start the new year fresh, in the spirit of friendship, fellowship, and yes, brotherhood.

L’Shanah Tovah!

2. SUPPORT THE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Golf Tournament 2014The Annual MoTAS Golf Tournament is now less than two months away: Monday, October 27, 2014. If you have been waiting to support the Golf Tournament, now is the time to do so!. What do we need? Its simple:

  • We need golfers to play. You can’t have a tournament without players. We need you to come and play on the course; we need you to bring your friends and business associates.
  • We need sponsors and advertisers. Advertising — both at the tournament and in the ad book — is key to the financial success of the tournament. The more successful the tournament; the more MoTAS can help TAS and its partner charities.
  • We need donations. These are used on the silent auction table and for special prizes. We already have lots of exciting donations, including gift certificates from Roger’s Rib Shack, Weilers Deli, Brents Deli, Stonefire Grill, Emles Restaurant, California Pizza Kitchen, Chi’s
Chinese Restaurant, Marmalade Cafe, Lazy Dog, Laemmle Theatres, and Dream Dinners; certificates for free bowling (including shoes and a pitcher of soda) at Matador Bowl; a Badminton / volleyball set; a Men’s high quality wristwatch; a USA swim team framed cap signed by members of the team; a USA swim team pennant signed by members of the team; a CBS-logo jacket; a CBS-logo baseball cap; a round of golf for 3 at Bel Aire Country Club; and a divot tool with MoTAS logo.

Detailed information on the Golf Tournament and all the ways you can participate may be found at http://golf2014.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. The form for participation may be found at https://tasmotas.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/2014golfentry-form.pdf

P.S.: Sisterhood will also be running Mah Jongg for those interested during the Golf Tournament. For more information, contact Anita Hoch, the Sisterhood Mah Jongg chair, at 818-360-0160 or email anitapearl47@gmail.com. It is a great alternative if you don’t want to be on the course. Dinner tickets will be available for purchase.

P.P.S. I understand that some people have trouble getting the email links to work when they use Gmail or another web mailer. This article from PCWorld describes how to configure your browser to handle the links correctly.

3. IT’S NEARLY TIME TO BUILD A BOOTH

Sukkah BuildingThe High Holydays start in a week, and this means it is nearly time to build the Temple Ahavat Shalom sukkah. The Men of TAS are readying their gloves, Allen wrenches, wire cutters, and other accoutrements of construction. Mark your calendar for the first Sunday in October, October 5th, at 8:45 AM. That morning, we’ll gather together under the watchful eye (and voice) of our Sukkah Foreman, Robert Levin, to build our Sukkah. I find this one of the most fun activities of the MoTAS year—men working together to build something. Come join us for the fun. RSVP at http://www.eventbee.com/event?eid=103328412. You’ll get a “ticket” confirming your RSVP, but no ticket is required to
participate.

4. LEARNING HOW THE TEMPLE RUNS

aaronOn the first Sunday of September, we saw how the Rabbi runs. On the second Sunday of October, October 12, 2014, at 8:45 AM, we’ll be learning how our Temple runs. Mark your calendar for our monthly speaker meeting where Aaron Solomon, our executive director will discuss how Temple Ahavat Shalom operates as a day-to-day business entity. In this presentation, Aaron will describe the business organization of TAS. He will cover each department including lay leadership and auxiliaries. He will provide a summary of the staff within each department including their titles and primary roles and responsibilities. He will also talk about how funds received are handled and the processes to ensure funds are correctly allocated to operational budget lines or restricted funds. Lastly, Aaron will discuss how each department works together to serve the larger Temple Mission: to provide a caring and joyful community, with diverse opportunities to discover personal meaning through enriching and sanctifying our relationships (k’hillah kedosha), exploring our connections with the Divine (brit), celebrating Jewish Life and Torah (talmud Torah), and being a force for healing and justice in our world (tikkun olam). Aaron will leave time
at the end for your questions on Temple operations.

5. MEN’S ONLY HANG-OUTS RESUME IN OCTOBER

Mens Only Discussion GroupOn Sunday, October 17th October 19th at 7:00 PM, the bi-monthly Men-Only Men’s Hang-Out and Discussion Groups resume. These meetings provide an opportunity for the Men of TAS to socialize, eat good food and discuss topics openly and confidentially from a men’s perspective. They provide a time for us to get to know each other more in depth and enjoy a few laughs. They take place at a host member’s home where we enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere. We hang out for the first hour swapping life’s stories while enjoying a meal or dessert together. Some men have a lot to say and others just enjoy listening to the banter back and forth. During the second half of the evening we bring up an interesting question about how we think or feel about certain aspects of life from a Jewish perspective. Other evenings the members bring up a controversial subject to hear multiple perspectives. Our group has dynamic opinions, which make for lively conversation. At the end of the evening we all respect each other’s right to an opinion and have a deeper appreciation for where our values came from.

For the 2014-2015 programming year Men’s Hang-Out/Discussion Groups have been scheduled for even months: Sunday, October 17 19, 2014, 7PM; Sunday, December 21, 2014, 6PM (Chanukah Food Extravaganza); Sunday, February 22, 2015, 6PM (Hang Out With The Rabbi); Sunday, April 12, 2015, 7PM, and Sunday, June 14, 2015, 7PM. To sign up for the October 17th 19th hang-out, visit http://motascybermaven.eventbee.com/event?eid=153626165, call Dave Friedman, 818-360-2323, or email vp2@tasnorthridge-motas.org.
