From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org.
1. MOTAS SHABBAT – FR 1/10
As you are aware, every year MoTAS has an opportunity to lead the congregation in prayer. We also give the temple our unofficial “State of MoTAS” address, and announce our Man of the Year. In past years, interested men were able to participate in the service, by reading sections in English, prayers in Hebrew, singing in our “choir,” or making brief reflections on their experiences with MoTAS.
This year, our service will be held on Friday, January 10, 2024, 7:00 PM. Although it will be streaming, it will NOT be on Zoom. You must be present to participate.
Please contact Bob Levine, at tasboblevine@gmail.com if you are able to join in, and what you would like to do. If you are unable/unwilling/not available, please let Bob know as well.
More information regarding what you would be doing will be sent out as soon as the service is put together.
2. JANUARY MOTAS MEMBERSHIP MEETING – SU 1/12
Our January Membership meeting will be Sunday, 1/12, at 9:00am. A full breakfast, including bagels, lox, and eggs, will be available starting at 8:45am. Join us for our usual business review, and learn what is happening with the temple. Our speaker will be Rabbi Becky Hoffman. She will be speaking on “Who Is a Jew? Over 40 Years In The Making”: In 1983, the Reform Movement adopted the resolution that a child of either a Jewish mother or Jewish father is Jewish. It seems so simple, but there was much to consider in forming this decision. Explore this decision, its roots in the legal tradition and the implications for Judaism today.
3. DINING OUT AT LEMON ZEST – MO 1/13
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to lunch or dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to lunch or dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our January Dining Does Good” will be Monday, January 13, 2025 at Lemon Zest, 9610 Reseda Blvd. Northridge, CA 91324, (818) 818-6164. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ or download it directly from our Box account. Once you are at the Box version of the flyer:
- If you are on a PC or Mac using a browser: (1) click on the white DOWNLOAD button; (2) there will be a pop-up about logging in to do more — ignore that – just close the popup box; (3) You will be prompted on where to save the download, or it will go into the downloads directory; (4) when the download is complete, open the PDF and print it. DO NOT right click and attempt to print from the Box page.
- If you using a browser on an Android phone: This takes you directly to the PDF. You can download or print from there.
- If you are using some other method, please send it to me and I’ll include it on this list.
- If you can’t figure this out at all: Drop me an email at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org , and I’ll send you the PDF as an attachment.
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
4. SISTERHOOD/MOTAS TRIVIA NIGHT – THU 1/30
Sisterhood’s January meeting will be a fun TRIVIA NIGHT! They are doing this event together with MoTAS, so bring your spouse, your significant other, and/or your kids! The fun takes place on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 7pm in the TAS Social Hall. This is not Sisterhood’s regular night, so mark your calendar!
Please RSVP to RSVP@tassisterhood.org by Monday, January 27. In fact, why don’t you RSVP today while you are thinking about it? You can always change your RSVP if something comes up.
5. SUPERBOWL SQUARES SALES NOW OPEN
The Monday Night Football season is now over, and now is the time to buy a Superbowl Square. The cost is only $36 per square, and you can help Temple Ahavat Shalom while potentially rewarding yourself. On-line registrations now have a small handling fee from TicketLeap that we used to absorb — this allows reduces the cost to MoTAS and allows us to do more for TAS. Payouts are $330 for each quarter, and $650 for the final score. A full board of 91 squares pays out $1640 to players, and $1636 to MoTAS. You can find the rules of the game, register and pay online, or find a form that you can print and mail in, at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/sports-squares/. Squares must be purchased by the Wednesday, February 5, 2025 before the Super Bowl.
