From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org. We are now in our summer hiatus, so the weekly will be every 2-3 weeks, depending on upcoming events.

1. SEPTEMBER SPEAKERS MEETING – SUN SEP 15 (DATE CHANGE)

Our speaker for Sunday, September 15th (NOTE DATE CHANGE) will be temple member Leonard Shaffer, who will be doing a show and tell on ham radio. Leonard has been interested in ham radio since the 1950’s and has had his license since 1975. He has around 4,000 contacts logged. A full breakfast, including bagels, lox, and eggs, will be available starting at 8:45am. Join us for our usual business review, and learn what is happening with the temple.

If you are wondering about the Pancake Breakfast: According to the Temple Calendar, we are doing the Pancake Breakfast the first Sunday of Sukkot, Sunday, October 20. We will be building the sukkah the Sunday before that, on October 13, the day after Yom Kippur.

2. FOOTBALL SQUARES – LAST CHANCE

The teams are in training camps, getting ready for the season, which starts in a few short weeks.  The good news is that we have a few places left for you to join in this year, as many of you have done in the past, and for which we are very grateful.

MoTAS is pleased to announce that because of the generosity of you and others, our Sports Squares program is making a contribution of up to $20,000 for a major renovation of our campus landscaping and beautification.  We could not have done this without your support.  Thank you.

Please reply to Bob directly (tasboblevine@gmail.com) directly with your subscription (maximum places = 4 per family unit), so that we can put your name on the grid board, and hopefully completely fill the board, as we have done every year since 2013.

The gridmasters with the best to you for a happy and healthy balance of the summer.

3. MRJ WEBINAR – TED DEUTCH/AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE – SEP 3 @ 5PM

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, MRJ will present its first webinar for the 2024-2025 programming year: The Honorable Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee. Ted Deutch, a lifelong Jewish and pro-Israel activist, assumed the role of CEO of American Jewish Committee (AJC) on October 1, 2022. He joined AJC following more than 12 years of service in the United States House of Representatives, representing Broward and Palm Beach Counties in Florida. In Congress, Ted served as chair of the House Ethics Committee, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, on which he served as chair of the Middle East, North Africa, and Global Counterterrorism Subcommittee.

The Webinar will start at 5pm Pacific. To register, visit https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0AOUQofaR5mFARKQxXuhaA?mc_cid=b704aa408a&mc_eid=4754b2e1d9#/registration

Coming soon, MRJ will speak with “Year In Israel” rabbinical and cantorial students along with students just beginning their internship. What – why – when? All that you wanted or need to know about our future leaders.

4. DINING OUT AT MICELEDAS MEXICAN GRILL – TUE SEP 24

Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our September Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, September 24,  at Micheledas Mexican Grill, 9735 Reseda Blvd, Northridge, CA 91324, (818) 527-1132. Just present the flyer when you order or pick up your take out order in person.

How do you get a flyer? You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ (click on the image of the flyer) or download PDF from our Box account . Once you are at the Box version of the flyer:

  • If you are on a PC or Mac using a browser: (1) click on the white DOWNLOAD button; (2) there will be a pop-up about logging in to do more — ignore that – just close the popup box; (3) You will be prompted on where to save the download, or it will go into the downloads directory; (4) when the download is complete, open the PDF and print it. DO NOT right click and attempt to print from the Box page.
  • If you using a browser on an Android phone: This takes you directly to the PDF. You can download or print from there.
  • If you are using some other method, please send it to me and I’ll include it on this list.
  • If you can’t figure this out at all: Drop me an email at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org , and I’ll send you the PDF as an attachment.

We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
