From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. 1. MOTAS SHABBAT – FR 1/19
As you are aware, every year MoTAS has an opportunity to lead the congregation in prayer. We also give the temple our unofficial “State of MoTAS” address, and announce our Man of the Year. In past years, interested men were able to participate in the service, by reading sections in English, prayers in Hebrew, singing in our “choir,” or making brief reflections on their experiences with MoTAS.
This year, our service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, 7:00 PM. Although it will be streaming, it will NOT be on Zoom. You must be present to participate.
2. JANUARY MOTAS MEMBERSHIP MEETING – SUN 1/21
Our January Membership meeting will be Sunday, 1/21, at 9:00am. Note that this is shifted a week later, due to MLK Day Weekend. A full breakfast, including bagels, lox, and eggs, will be available starting at 8:45am. Join us for our usual business review, and learn what is happening with the temple. Our speaker will be Hal Bass on the Armenian Genocide. We’re also collecting any surplus yellow candles you might have for redistribution, so bring them with you.
3. SUPERBOWL SQUARES ON SALE
The Monday Night Football season is nearly over, and now is the time to buy a Superbowl Square. The cost is only $36 per square, and you can help Temple Ahavat Shalom while potentially rewarding yourself. On-line registrations now have a small handling fee from TicketLeap that we used to absorb — this allows reduces the cost to MoTAS and allows us to do more for TAS. Payouts are $330 for each quarter, and $650 for the final score. A full board of 91 squares pays out $1640 to players, and $1636 to MoTAS. You can find the rules of the game, register and pay online, or find a form that you can print and mail in, at http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org/. Squares must be purchased by the Wednesday, February 7, 2024 before the Super Bowl.
4. DINING OUT AT EMLES TH 1/25
“Dining Does Good” has returned. Things have gotten more complicated since the pandemic with all the delivery apps and such, so this is DINE IN or PICK UP only. Let’s support MoTAS, and all show our smiling faces at Emle’s in Northridge on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our January Dining Does Good” will be Thursday, January 25 at Emle’s Restaurant, 9250 Reseda Blvd #1, Northridge, CA 91324, (818) 772-2203. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ or download it directly from our Box account (to do this, (1) go to the link or click on the flyer on our dining out page; (2) click on the white DOWNLOAD button; (3) there will be a pop-up about logging in to do more — ignore that. You will be prompted on where to save the download, or it will go into the downloads directory; (4) when the download is complete, open the PDF and print it)..
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
5. ON THE HORIZON
The following events are on the MoTAS Horizon. Future weeklies will have appropriate links.
- January 31 – Annual Appeal Starts
- February 11 – Monthly meeting. Al Lapides on cars.
- March 9 – MRJ Man of the year dinner at TAS.
- March 10 – Monthly meeting
- March 17 – MoTAS hosting breakfast for school parents. Possible game day.
