From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org.
1. NOVEMBER (NOV 5) / DECEMBER (DEC 3) MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS
Our November Membership Meeting will be Sunday, November 5 at 845am. Note: This is the first Sunday, as the temple facility is closed the second Sunday. Our previous speaker had to reschedule, and we’re looking for new speaker. Right now, the plan is to discuss MoTAS Plans for the upcoming year. Some potential ideas:
- We’re exploring a trip to the Nethercutt museum. They are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We hesitate to schedule an event on Shabbat, so that leaves Thursday or Friday. We need to determine if we want to do this and how.. We need a volunteer to organize this.
- We’ve discussed ordering and selling hamentashen for Purim. We need to talk to the congregation that has done this and figure out how we can adapt it to TAS. Again, we need a volunteer to coordinate this.
- We need speakers for meetings — they can be remote with interaction via Zoom.
Our December Membership Meeting will be Sunday, December 3 at 845am. Note: This is the first Sunday, as the temple facility is closed the second Sunday. Our speaker will be Janet Rice, TAS President.
2. DINING OUT – CHIS CHINESE – WED NOV 8
“Dining Does Good” has returned. Things have gotten more complicated since the pandemic with all the delivery apps and such, so this is DINE IN or PICK UP only. Let’s support MoTAS, and all show our smiling faces at Chi’s Chinese in Northridge on Wed, November 8.
Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our June Dining Does Good” will be Wednesday, November 8 at Chi’s Chinese, 9635 Reseda Blvd. Northridge, CA 91324, (818) 886-6928, chis_chinese@verizon.net. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ or download it directly from our Box account (to do this, (1) go to the link or click on the flyer on our dining out page; (2) click on the white DOWNLOAD button; (3) there will be a pop-up about logging in to do more — ignore that. You will be prompted on where to save the download, or it will go into the downloads directory; (4) when the download is complete, open the PDF and print it)..
We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
3. CHANUKAH BOUTIQUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The annual Sisterhood Holiday Boutique is scheduled for Sunday, October 29 from 10am to 3pm. Typically, the Men of TAS helps with the food service. The current plan is that we will be picking up individually wrapped sandwiches and condiments, and providing bagged chips, canned or bottled drinks. We will need people to help pickup (and possibly pre-package) the food. We will need folks to sell and deliver the food. We will need folks to help clean up. If you will be able to help us at this event, please contact Larry Hoffman at president@tasnorthridge-motas.org.
In particular, we’re looking for volunteers to help inventory and shop next week. We need to inventory drinks and chips on hand after the poker tournament. We could also use a volunteer to order and pick up from Subway.
4. MOTAS MENS DISCUSSION GROUP
We are working to bring back our Men’s Discussion Groups. As described on our web page: The Mens Only Discussion Group provides a time for us to get to know each other more in depth and enjoy a few laughs. We get together at a host’s home to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere. We hang out for the first hour swapping life’s stories while enjoying a meal together. Some men have a lot to say and others just enjoy listening to the banter back and forth. During the second half of the evening we bring up an interesting question about how we think or feel about certain aspects of life from a Jewish perspective. Other evenings the members bring up a controversial subject to hear multiple perspectives. Our group has dynamic opinions, which makes for lively conversation. At the end of the evening we all respect each other’s right to an opinion and have a deeper appreciation for where our values came from.
The next discussion is scheduled for Thursday, November 30th. We’re looking for a member to host the discussion. If you would be interested, please contact Larry Hoffman at president@tasnorthridge-motas.org.
