From the Editor: The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org.

1. SUKKAH BUILDING – THU SEP 28 – TOMORROW

When you’re tired, what sounds appealing? Perhaps a little shack out the field, with some fruits, where perhaps you can see the twinkling stars in the sky? In other words, it’s Sukkah Time!

Of course, we have to build the Sukkah first. JEWISH MEN WITH TOOLS (MoTAS) are scheduled to build our temple Sukkah on Thursday, September 28. We’re doing this mid-week because Yom Kippur was Sunday, and Sukkot is on Friday, and we couldn’t build it before Yom Kippur. The current plan is to start early: some social time around 815 am, and the construction will commence at 830 am. All able bodied men [and women] are invited to come help build our community Sukkah and join in the fun and camaraderie. Bring your gloves, Allen wrenches, your mask. your appetite and your smiles. There will be free bagels, cream cheese and coffee for all. This easy job can be completed in about an hour. It is extremely important that you attend if you can, as a number of regulars will not be available this year due to the timing.

Thank you to Jose Maximo, Daniel’s gardener, for supplying the palm fronds. If folks are looking for a gardener, Daniel will have cards at the next meeting.

2. PANCAKE BREAKFAST – SUN OCT 1

[Note: Key changes are underlined] Batter up, not for baseball but for our annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, October 1! Our Master Flippers, Scott and Bill, will be up at the plate, I mean grill, with their hot bats, I mean spatulas. We need the rest of the team that morning ready to play their positions: mixer, table set-up, serving and clean-up. The Rabbi wants to serve the pancakes between 11:00am and 11:30am, so we’ll start setting up around :900am (this may change as we learn more of the logistics for the day). We should be done by 1pm. as there will be no extra innings. A sign up sheet was circulated at the September meeting; if you missed it, you can signup online at https://volunteersignup.org/PEK89 .

If you’re curious, the menu will include: Pancakes, fresh fruit, Syrup, Powdered Sugar, Butter, plus loads of great other toppings. It will be free to students and parents, although donations will always be welcome.

3. OCTOBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING – SUN OCT 8 – SAVING MONEY ON YOUR CABLE BILL

Our next monthly MoTAS meeting is Sunday, October 8. Specific location to be given once we know it, but the time will be our usual time: 8:45am for Breakfast, with the meeting starting at 9:00am (sorry that was omitted for the last meeting, but it hasn’t changed in years). Join us for our traditional MoTAS breakfast and our planning for our October activities.

With this meeting, we are returning to an old tradition: speakers. Our speaker this Sunday will be Coby Yollis on saving money on cable bills. Coby Yollis, son of MoTAS Vice President Scott Yollis, will be sharing information on how to save money on cable bills. Coby has worked for both Spectrum and AT&T, and knows every trick in the trade. If there is a way to get a better deal from your current company or a much better deal at another company, Coby knows how, including every possible discount you might qualify for to lower your bill. Real life examples will be quite helpful; we encourage you to bring your existing cable bills so Coby can compare what is being billed to the current market, what they might want to do if they wanted to save money.

This meeting is open to everyone who wants to save money on their cable bills. Meeting is at 8:45 AM. Presentation will begin at 9:00 AM. Short business meeting after the presentation.

Looking forward to our November 5th meeting: Our speaker will be George Bancroft, who will talk about trains.

4. COASTAL CLEAN UP – SUN OCT 15

MoTAS has been invited to partner with TASTY for a Coastal Cleanup on October 15th. This is a program with Heal The Bay. It starts with a ‘Beach Talk’ discussing pollution, then there’s a team building activity, followed by the beach cleanup. More information once we have it.

5. FALL POKER TOURNAMENT – SUN OCT 22

Our Fall Poker Tournament is Sunday, October 22, and should operate similar to the Spring tournament. The sign up forms and on-line signup is available at the expected place: https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/poker/.

6. DINING OUT – PRESTO PASTA – TUE OCT 24

“Dining Does Good” has returned. Things have gotten more complicated since the pandemic with all the delivery apps and such, so this is DINE IN or PICK UP only. Let’s support MoTAS, and all show our smiling faces at Presto Pasta in Granada Hills on Tuesday, October 24.

Would you like an easy way to help MoTAS financially? How about taking your family to dinner. The MoTAS “Dining Does Good” allows you to go out to dinner, and have the restaurant donate a portion of your check support the Men of TAS. Our June Dining Does Good” will be Tuesday, October 24 at Presto Pasta, 17923 Chatsworth St.,Granada Hills, CA 91344 (818) 360-7737, granadahills@prestopasta.com. You can find a flyer for the event at https://wp.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining/ or download it directly from our Box account .

We really encourage you to come and support these events: we raise a little extra funds for our work, but more importantly, we come together and break bread as a Temple family on a regular basis. It is a real joy to walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see your Temple friends, to sit down and share a table and talk. This is the heart and goal of MoTAS: Building Relationships.
