From the Editor: Have you missed me? August was a quiet month with no MoTAS activities. But September is on the horizon, and we’re going to be getting busy…. The goal of the Weekly is to get MoTAS members the information they need on upcoming activities, and then get out of the way. If you have any information on MoTAS activities you need to get out to the membership, please contact the Weekly Editor at cybermaven@tasnorthridge-motas.org.

1. MOTAS 23-24 KICKOFF MEETING – SUN SEP 10

MoTAS is starting our 2023-2024 programming year right – with an extra special breakfast and an overview of our plans for the year. You’re probably asking yourself: How can MoTAS top our already special breakfast of eggs, bagels, and lox?  Will there be bacon? Well, the answer to that is no, but we are planning something special. Will is be turkey sausage? capers? pancakes? The only way to know is to attend the meeting.

During the meeting, we’ll be going over our planned activities for the coming year. We’ll be looking for volunteers to coordinate some of them. We’ll also be bringing you up to speed on what has been happening at TAS over the summer. It should be a really interesting and informative meeting, so we hope you can attend. Who knows what other prizes we might have in store.

2. SUKKAH BUILDING – THU SEP 28

When you’re tired, what sounds appealing? Perhaps a little shack out the field, with some fruits, where perhaps you can see the twinkling stars in the sky? In other words, it’s Sukkah Time!

Of course, we have to build the Sukkah first. JEWISH MEN WITH TOOLS (MoTAS) are scheduled to build our temple Sukkah on Thursday, September 28. We’re doing this mid-week because Yom Kippur is on Sunday, and Sukkot is on Friday, and we can’t build it before Yom Kippur. The current plan is to start early: some social time around 815a, and the construction will commence at 830 am. All able bodied men [and women] are invited to come help build our community Sukkah and join in the fun and camaraderie.  Bring your gloves, Allen wrenches, your mask. your appetite and your smiles. There will be free bagels, cream cheese and coffee for all. This easy job can be completed in about an hour. It is extremely important that you attend if you can, as a number of regulars will not be available this year due to the timing.

Please let Scott Gore (scott22g@msn.com) know if YOU can shop for chicken wire and wire ties. We believe we have a source for palm fronds, but if you have an additional source for palm fronds, corn stalks, or other similar flat-ish vegetation that would be good for the roof or the sides, please let us know.

We will be passing around a sign-up sheet at the September meeting.

3. PANCAKE BREAKFASH – SUN OCT 1

Batter up, not for baseball but for our annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, October 1! Our Master Flippers, Scott and Bill, will be up at the plate, I mean grill, with their hot bats, I mean spatulas. We need the rest of the team that morning ready to play their positions: mixer, table set-up, serving and clean-up. The Rabbi wants to serve the pancakes at 11:30am, so we’ll start setting up around 930am (this may change as we learn more of the logistics for the day). We should be done by 1pm. as there will be no extra innings. We’ll be passing around a sign up sheet at the September meeting, or you can signup online at https://volunteersignup.org/PEK89 .

If you’re curious, the menu will include: Pancakes, fresh fruit, Syrup, Powdered Sugar, Butter, plus loads of great other toppings. It will be free to students and parents, although donations will always be welcome.

4. FALL POKER TOURNAMENT – SUN OCT 22

We’re starting to gear up for the fall Poker Tournament. It is scheduled for Sunday, October 22, and should operate similar to the Spring tournament. We hope to have the sign up page and forms available by Labor Day, but for now… SAVE THE DATE.
