The Monday Night Football season is almost over, and the Superbowl is rapidly approaching. Now is the time to buy a Superbowl Square. The cost is only $25 per square, and you can help Temple Ahavat Shalom while potentially rewarding yourself. Yes, the price has been raised slightly to account for eliminating some biased squares, but the payout has also been raised: $230 for each quarter, and $460 for the final score. A full board of 91 squares pays out $1150 to players, and $1125 to MoTAS. You can find the rules of the game, register and pay online, or find a form that you can print and mail in, at http://squares.tasnorthridge-motas.org/.
The next monthly membership meeting of MoTAS will be on Sunday, December 11.
Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short story “Gimpel the Fool” (1953) appeared in English translation in a 1953 edition of the Partisan Review. The story is considered one of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s most notable and representative work of short fiction. With this story, Bellow launched Singer on a career that would result in the Nobel Prize for Literature. Let’s all read it. Then talk about it. You can find the story at http://tinyurl.com/motas-gimpel.
The video, Do You Understand the Electoral College, has over 44 million views, over 26K comments on Facebook and over 1 million shares. This has all occurred over a period of five days. How did this happen? Donald Trump was elected President by winning the Electoral College; but Hillary Clinton will probably win the popular vote. Suddenly, the Electoral College is a very hot topic. See for yourself. https://www.prageru.com/courses/political-science/do-you-understand-electoral-college
As usual, the meeting will begin with breakfast at 8:45 am, with the meeting proper starting at 9:00 am. At this meeting, we’ll also be discussing our Jewish Christmas event and the January MoTAS Shabbat.
At our November meeting we watched videos that are being restricted by youtube and Google. You can do something about it. Visit https://www.prageru.com/stop-youtube-blocking-prageru-videos to investigate.
We need to set up a system for contact members who are sick, bereaved or in need of help. We are going to set up a contact list of volunteers. Also as list of members and their loved ones we should contact. If any of you have experience or best practices, please let email@example.com know.
Our December “Dining Does Good” will be on Monday, December 12 at Two Guys from Italy, 16915 San Fernando Mission Blvd, Granada Hills, CA 91344 (at Balboa and Mission) from 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM. Present a flyer when you dine or take-out, and MoTAS and the TAS Alumni Committee will split 20% of your bill (including the lunch buffet). There is more information, as well as a printable flyer (just click on the image) at http://www.tasnorthridge-motas.org/activities/dining. You will also find the flyer in the Temple foyer, in the December Menorah, and in the weekly eblasts.
Once a year TAS celebrates the contributions of MoTAS at the MoTAS Shabbat. This is a special Shabbat service that is primarily led by the members of MoTAS. If you are a male member of TAS and would like to participate in the service, please contact Bob Levine, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please let him know if you want to read Hebrew. You can also RSVP online at http://motascybermaven.eventbee.com/event?eid=129445893; use a middle initial of “H” if you want to read Hebrew. You can also call Daniel at (818) 438-5781 and the message will get to Bob.
UPDATE: So far, no one has expressed an opinion or interest in this event. If there are no responses by next Monday, we’ll assume that the timing of this event (on a Saturday night, during Chanukkah) means that people want to do something on their own.
We are currently in the planning stages for our Jewish Christmas activity, also known as a movie and Chinese food. This year, Christmas Eve is the first night of Chanukah, and Christmas Day (and hence, dinner on Christmas) is the 2nd night of Chanukah. Last year, we made a reservation at Hunan Garden and had a group dinner with a fixed menu and fixed costs. This year, owning to the confluence of holidays, we have two options:
- Go Out for Chinese. Do what we did last year: coordinate a menu with the restaurant, pay in advance, and all meet for dinner at a specified time.
- Latke Party/Take Out Chinese. In the spirit of the Holiday, we’ll have potluck latkes (bring your batter), and bring in Chinese food (again, pre-ordered). For this, we would need a volunteer to provide a house to host.
As we did last year, we’ll pick a small set of movies and coordiante showings so we can meet as groups for the difference shows, before we meet for discussion and dinner.
If you have a particular preference for what we should do, please drop an email to email@example.com.
Volunteers are needed to prime and paint three small wooden benches for our school. All expenses reimbursed by the Men of TAS. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are available to help.
As always, remember that the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom is *your* organization. Keep up to date on our activities at http://www.tasnorthridge-motas.org/ and participate. Sign up for our action alert list at http://tinyurl.com/motas-action-alert. We want to serve all the men of Temple Ahavat Shalom and welcome new participants from the TAS membership. Join our Facebook group and “follow” our website. Come be part of the Men of Temple Ahavat Shalom!
